Manila: The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced it is organizing an inter-agency operation to expedite the search for the remains of missing 'sabungeros' (cockfight aficionados) at the bed of Taal Lake.
According to Philippines News Agency, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla stated that the DOJ is awaiting further details to commence an exploratory dive. The operation involves mapping and scheduling efforts, with the Japanese government expected to provide necessary equipment. Remulla highlighted the involvement of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and its Mines and Geosciences Board (MGB), which possesses a ground-penetrating radar that may be utilized for the operation.
Ground-penetrating radar, a non-intrusive method, helps locate hidden structures using electromagnetic waves. The DOJ plans to form a composite team with the DENR-MGB as part of a whole-of-government approach to address the serious matter involving many Filipinos' lives.
The inter-agency operation will be led by DOJ Assistant Secretary Eliseo Cruz, coordinating with the Philippine Coast Guard, the Philippine National Police Maritime Group, and the DENR-MGB. Assistant Mico Clavano will liaise with the Japanese government to secure additional equipment.
Government lawyers are evaluating evidence for potential cases, including kidnapping, murder, and violations of international humanitarian law against suspects. Remulla noted that the DOJ is assessing probable cases for filing and investigating the alleged fish pen owner in the lake connected to the abductions.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court (SC) is conducting a thorough probe into information received from the DOJ about a possible influence over judges and justices related to the 'sabungero' case. SC spokesperson Camille Ting confirmed that the Court treats such reports with utmost seriousness and conducts independent investigations, taking appropriate actions as warranted. The Court's policy is to act on credible corruption reports from high-ranking officials like the Secretary of Justice.
