Manila: The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday refuted former palace spokesperson Harry Roque's assertion that the charges against him are politically motivated. Speaking to reporters, DOJ spokesperson Polo Martinez emphasized that Roque's use of the "non-refoulement principle" is not applicable in his case.

According to Philippines News Agency, Martinez stated that the principle of non-refoulement implies political persecution in the country of origin. He questioned whether such persecution exists in the Philippines, asserting that Roque is being charged for alleged crimes and should respond to these charges. Martinez highlighted that Roque would have the opportunity to defend himself if he returned, emphasizing that no avenues are being closed to him in the legal process.

Roque, in a Facebook post over the weekend, maintained that he is protected under the international principle of non-refoulement, despite the Philippine Government's attempts to revoke his passport and seek an Interpol Red Notice. Roque is facing charges including inciting to sedition and human trafficking.

Martinez urged Roque and others with pending legal cases to return to the Philippines and confront the charges against them. He insisted that the DOJ and the Philippine government are calling on them to voluntarily submit to the jurisdiction of the Sandiganbayan and other relevant courts.
