Iloilo city: The city government has announced a four-month closed fishing season at the Iloilo River, effective from December 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. The initiative aims to restore fish stock, improve livelihoods, and conserve river biodiversity.
According to Philippines News Agency, City Agriculturist I±igo Garingalao highlighted that the decision follows a comprehensive study by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. The study identified December to March as a crucial period for the reproduction and growth of sea bass and other aquatic species in the river. The fishing ban will cover a 2.7-kilometer stretch of the river, from the Atty. Cesar M. Drilon Bridge to the Diversion Road Bridge.
Garingalao emphasized the importance of allowing fish to spawn naturally. Executive Assistant for Agriculture Ely Estante, who authored the resolution, noted that while the legislation initially focused on sea bass, it was expanded to include other aquatic species to ensure food security.
Penalties for violators include a PHP1,000 fine or community service for the first offense, a PHP2,000 fine or community service for the second offense, and a PHP5,000 fine, along with confiscation of catch and fishing gear, and boat impoundment for the third offense. Garingalao added that enforcement will involve coordination with the Iloilo City Police, the Maritime Group of the Philippine National Police, and the Philippine Coast Guard.
