Don’t Take Advantage of Lenten Demand Surge, Fish Vendors Told

Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Tuesday called on fish retailers to avoid taking advantage of consumers amid the observance of Holy Week: The Department of Agriculture (DA) issued a directive urging fish vendors to maintain reasonable pricing during the Lenten season, a period when demand for fish and seafood typically increases as many Catholics refrain from eating meat, particularly on Good Friday.

According to Philippine News Agency, Assistant Secretary Joycel Panlilio, the DA deputy spokesperson, emphasized that the current prices of fish products in local markets should not see further increases. Panlilio stated that the Lenten season and the associated rise in demand should not be used as a justification for hiking fish prices, ensuring that consumers can continue to purchase fish at fair prices. She highlighted the importance of allowing consumers to enjoy fish without financial strain.

The DA has previously indicated that any price adjustments on retail fish should remain within a 15 percent increase. Panlilio reassured the public that there would be an adequate supply of fish for those observing Lenten traditions, affirming the DA's commitment to ensuring sufficient market supply during Holy Week.

Additionally, Panlilio assured that there would be ongoing monitoring of fish prices in local markets to prevent unreasonable price hikes. As of Monday, the DA Bantay Presyo reported that milkfish prices in Metro Manila range from PHP140 to PHP250 per kilogram, tilapia from PHP120 to PHP180 per kilogram, and galunggong from PHP180 to PHP320 per kilogram.
