DOST Highlights Thriving Economic Ecosystem in E-Sports and Game Development

Manila: The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has announced that the Philippines is cultivating a robust economic environment centered around e-sports and game development. This statement was made by Warren Gomez, chief science research specialist of DOST-National Capital Region, emphasizing the agency's commitment to fostering local talent and promoting tech-driven entrepreneurship.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gomez highlighted that in developed nations, e-sports and game development have become billion-dollar industries. He noted that the Philippines is among the countries with a significant number of e-sports enthusiasts. Gomez expressed optimism that with the successful development of local talent, the country could soon focus on homegrown games instead of relying solely on international ones in the e-sports sector.

The DOST recognizes the potential of this sector to create jobs and enhance the digital economy, positioning the country as a potential regional hub for game development and e-sports. Gomez mentioned that international companies are hiring talented Filipino creatives for their production and design teams, reflecting the industry's growth and opportunities.

The department is actively supporting this growth, with universities now offering courses in game development and e-sports, establishing these fields as legitimate career paths. In 2024, the DOST signed a memorandum of understanding with the E-Sports World Federation to nurture Filipino talent and support emerging start-ups through their Start-up Grant Fund and Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).

To further expand access and capacity within the industry, the DOST is set to launch a nationwide game development boot camp from August 2025 until the year's end. This initiative aims to engage senior high school students and budding professionals, connecting them with industry experts to gain practical experience in product development, marketing, and business building.

Additionally, the department is organizing competitions and tournaments to provide developers with a platform to showcase their games, thereby enhancing their creativity, technical competencies, and digital marketing skills. The DOST plans to visit various regions to support start-ups at the grassroots level and ensure the integration of initiatives across its regional offices.
