Cebu: The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Thursday released its initial assessment of damage sustained by tourist sites and establishments across Visayas following the massive quake that struck Cebu on Sept. 30. In Central Visayas, the DOT reported that several heritage sites and tourist destinations experienced varying degrees of damage, ranging from minor cracks to partial collapses, leading to temporary closures for public safety.
According to Philippines News Agency, in Cebu Province, the Archdiocesan Shrine of Santa Rosa de Lima in Daanbantayan suffered significant structural loss, while the San Isidro Labrador Church in Tabogon saw its facade and roof collapse. Other affected sites include the Medellin Tourist Rest Area, Capelinha de Fatima Replica, and several parish churches with varying levels of damage. Cultural sites in Cebu City, including the Kabilin Center and Museo Sugbo, have been closed for safety inspections and repairs.
In Bohol, the Hinagdanan Cave and the National Museum of the Philippines-Bohol remain closed pending inspection. Accommodation establishments in Cebu City, such as Nustar, experienced severe damage, prompting the evacuation of 337 guests. Various hotels and resorts in the San Remigio area and Bogo City also faced moderate to severe damage, leading to temporary closures.
The DOT Central Visayas has dispatched teams to assist affected areas by providing essentials like medical supplies and drinking water. Meanwhile, in the Negros Island Region, areas like Dumaguete City and Sibulan reported weak shaking with no major damage, but Murcia in Negros Occidental experienced the strongest shaking with some structural damage. Light to moderate shaking was felt in several other cities and municipalities across the region.
In Siquijor province, perceptible ground shaking was reported, particularly affecting coastal and low-lying areas. The DOT continues to coordinate with local government units, disaster response teams, and tourism stakeholders to ensure tourist safety and expedite the restoration of affected sites.
