DOTr Orders Airlines to Waive Fees for Opong-Cancelled Flights

Manila: Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez has directed airlines to waive rebooking fees and provide full refunds for flights cancelled due to Severe Tropical Storm Opong, internationally known as Bualoi. The directive aims to assist affected passengers in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s orders.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lopez has instructed the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) to engage with airlines operating in the country to ensure they comply with the fee waiver for Opong-cancelled flights. Airlines are also required to inform passengers about the status of their flights promptly.

Lopez has also mandated airport and port managers to offer food and beverages to stranded passengers. Airports are instructed to remain open to provide shelter and necessities to those affected by cancellations.

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) are implementing a "no sail policy" to ensure passenger safety. Meanwhile, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has collaborated with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to distribute food and drinks to those stranded in ports.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and its related agencies are on increased alert to ensure they are prepared to respond to the impacts of Opong. The PCG has deployed over 5,600 personnel, ships, 166 rescue boats, and 122 land vehicles along Opong's projected path to assist in rescue and evacuation operations.
