Manila: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will expand its Active Transport program to make roads inclusive for cyclists and pedestrians. Transportation Undersecretary Jesus Ferdinand Ortega announced that the DOTr would continue to establish bike lanes nationwide and provide facilities for cyclists. According to Philippines News Agency, Ortega stated on DOTr's Sakay Na! radio program on Radyo Pilipinas that the bike lanes program would persist and expand. He emphasized the department's commitment to ensuring the growth and maintenance of bike lanes across the country. Under the Active Transport program, the DOTr aims to establish 2,400 kilometers of protected and dedicated lanes for cyclists by 2028. In addition to cycling infrastructure, the DOTr is constructing walkways to enhance pedestrian safety. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has indicated that the national government will prioritize active transport by creating facilities such as safe walkways and secured bike lanes. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote healthier and more sustainable modes of travel. Active transport aligns with the National Transport Policy and the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, which prioritize pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles in the hierarchy of road users.
