Manila: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has teamed up with various government agencies and private entities to clear "esteros" or creeks of obstructions as part of the 'Oplan Kontra Baha' initiative.
According to Philippines News Agency, Secretary Vince Dizon announced plans to coordinate with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the National Housing Authority (NHA), and several private firms to remove trees obstructing canals and provide proper relocation for informal settler families residing along the esteros.
On Wednesday, the DPWH head led the launch of the Oplan Kontra Baha campaign in Las Pi±as City. He was joined by Mayor April Aguilar and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairperson Romando Artes. The officials examined the progress of the cleanup efforts along Tartar Creek, specifically in Barangays Pamplona Tres and Talon Dos.
"We asked for the support and cooperation of the residents of Las Pi±as. As you can see, our creek is now clear of trash. We are asking for your cooperation to keep it this way, free of trash and debris that could clog the creek," Dizon stated.
The Oplan Kontra Baha campaign was initiated 10 days ago in response to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to intensify efforts to reduce flooding in Metro Manila.
