Manila:The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is exploring the integration of both concrete and nature-based elements in flood control projects, with a focus on flood-prone areas like Pampanga and Bulacan.
According to Philippines News Agency, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon mentioned that the department is investigating the use of hybrid structures to enhance flood mitigation efforts. He emphasized the importance of learning from countries that have successfully adopted similar approaches, which involve moving away from solely concrete-based solutions to incorporate more nature-based strategies.
Dizon highlighted that while nature-based structures are beneficial, some projects still require the use of concrete. He stressed the need for careful study and consultation with experts to avoid unnecessary expenditures.
The DPWH plans to implement these hybrid projects in northern Luzon, specifically targeting North Manila Bay towns such as Hagonoy, Paombong, parts of Malolos in Bulacan, and Macabebe, Masantol, and Sasmuan in Pampanga.
