Zamboanga City:Authorities have seized approximately PHP14 million worth of smuggled cigarettes that were discovered abandoned along the city's shore.
According to Philippines News Agency, Brig. Gen. Elmer Ragay, director of the Police Regional Office - Zamboanga Peninsula, reported that the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force 'Seaborne' Company recovered the illicit goods in Sitio Stanvac, Barangay Campo Islam, on Tuesday. The discovery followed a tip-off about suspected smuggled cigarettes along the shoreline.
The information was verified, leading to the recovery of the abandoned cigarettes and a motorboat believed to be linked to the smuggling operation. Bureau of Customs (BOC) - Port of Zamboanga Collector Manuel Zurbito confirmed the contraband included 94 master cases and 36 reams of Dunston cigarettes, which have since been handed over to the BOC.
Dunston cigarettes are mainly produced in the United Arab Emirates and are known to be smuggled across maritime routes into Southeast Asian markets, including the Philippines.
Brig. Gen. Ragay emphasized their ongoing commitment to combating smuggling and illegal trade. He stated that the authorities will continue enhancing law-enforcement operations, increasing police visibility, and collaborating with agencies like the BOC and local communities to maintain peace and security in the region.
