Abra de ilog: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Wednesday issued a cease and desist order on the lifting operations of a contractor on Udalo Bridge in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro following the death of a worker.
According to Philippines News Agency, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon ordered the Legacy Construction Corp., contractor of the bridge in Barangay Udalo, to stop the construction works after a crane collapsed while lifting a concrete girder, killing a 61-year-old construction worker.
Dizon directed the DPWH-Mimaropa Regional Office to investigate whether the crane's collapse was caused by material fatigue, overloading, or lack of equipment maintenance, and if comprehensive safety protocols were implemented.
The construction company was also ordered to submit updated third-party heavy equipment certificates and maintenance logs for all cranes on site as part of the equipment audit.
The DPWH said the private contractor may face severe penalties if the investigation reveals violations of Occupational Safety and Health Standards.
The victim was reportedly not wearing personal protective equipment at the time of the incident on Tuesday, according to the actual video footage.
