Manila: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has confirmed that its personnel and equipment are ready to conduct clearing operations in regions affected by Super Typhoon Leon, also known internationally as Kong-Rey. The assurance was made public on Thursday as the department mobilizes resources to address the impact of the typhoon. According to Philippines News Agency, the DPWH has mobilized a total of 1,113 personnel, supported by 102 heavy equipment units, 85 motor vehicles, and 2,190 light equipment units. These resources are on standby to ensure a swift response to any infrastructure disruptions caused by the typhoon. Currently, the San Fernando-Magulin Road is the only road reported to be affected, due to erosion of slope protection. Despite this, the road remains open to all types of vehicles, albeit with only one lane passable. DPWH 2 (Cagayan Valley) Assistant Regional Director Editha Babaran reported that an additional 43 personnel, along with 11 heavy equipment units, two motor vehic les, and 12 light equipment units, are also on standby. She highlighted the situation concerning the Itawes Bridge in Cagayan province, which has become impassable due to river overflow. Efforts are underway by the regional office to address the situation and enable the bridge to be reopened promptly. In the northernmost province of Batanes, clearing operations and damage assessment are pending due to the ongoing stormy weather as Typhoon Leon approaches Taiwan. Babaran emphasized that these activities will commence once weather conditions improve, ensuring that the affected areas are restored to normalcy as quickly as possible.
