Makati city: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will assess the cause of potholes along the southbound portion of the rehabilitated Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) Busway in Makati City.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DPWH's initial finding suggests that the potholes were caused by accumulated rainwater that prevented proper drainage. In a media briefing at Malaca±ang in Manila, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro indicated that DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon will examine the condition of the damaged road and determine what caused the asphalt to deteriorate.

'Ang pagkakaalam ko po at nabanggit din po ni Sec. Vince, ito po ay ieksaminin, ia-assess kung ano ba talaga iyong nangyari (As far as I know, and as Sec. Vince also mentioned, this will be examined and assessed to determine what really happened),' Castro said.

Dizon, during his site inspection on Monday, found that the concrete barriers along the busway were obstructing the flow of rainwater, leading to water accumulation and subsequent damage to the asphalt. 'Kasi kahapon nabanggit niya mayroon lang tubig na parang na-stuck at hindi nakaagos lahat (He mentioned yesterday that apparently water that got trapped and was unable to drain completely),' Castro said.

Dizon has ordered the immediate repair of the potholes at no cost to the government. When asked whether the DPWH would continue the contract of the contractor responsible for the EDSA Busway rehabilitation, Castro stated that the matter would have to be examined and assessed.

The EDSA Busway Phase 2 is currently underway, with the DPWH aiming to complete the project by 2027. It includes the construction of new stations and improvements to existing ones, such as wider sidewalks and asphalt overlaying.
