Albay: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian has assured sustained assistance for local government units (LGUs) and families affected by the ongoing unrest of Mayon Volcano. He emphasized the department's commitment to support those affected, following President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive for a coordinated and efficient disaster response.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian visited Albay to meet with local leaders and assess preemptive evacuation efforts. The visit aimed to identify immediate needs and ensure that the provincial government receives the necessary support. Currently, 963 families or 3,516 individuals are staying in 13 evacuation centers, while 12 families or 39 individuals are temporarily housed with relatives or friends.

Gatchalian highlighted the DSWD's preparedness to provide long-term support should the situation worsen. The agency plans to continue distributing family food packs (FFPs), non-food items, emergency cash transfers (ECT), and cash-for-work (CFW) programs, particularly targeting affected farmers. He mentioned that the cash-for-work program could extend up to 180 days if necessary.

The DSWD has already initiated stockpiling operations, with approximately 155,000 FFPs in regional warehouses and an additional 100,000 expected to arrive soon. This preparation ensures that food and other essentials are readily available for the evacuees.

Shirley Bo, an evacuee from Barangay Calbayog, Malilipot, expressed gratitude for the government's assistance, which has been vital since her family cannot return to their home located within the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone.

Albay Governor Noel Rosal also expressed appreciation for the DSWD's support and thanked the national government for providing livelihood opportunities to displaced residents through the cash-for-work program.
