DSWD Distributes PHP7.3 Billion in Cash Aid to Over 1.4 Million PUV Drivers Nationwide

Zambales: In line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to assist the public transport sector, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has successfully distributed over PHP7.3 billion in cash relief assistance to more than 1.4 million public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers across the nation.

According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao confirmed in a radio interview that the Department remains dedicated to completing payouts for all registered and legitimate drivers listed by the Transport Network Companies (TNCs). She highlighted that the payout process for jeepney and tricycle drivers outside the National Capital Region is still underway.

Dumlao elaborated that for PUV drivers within the NCR, the DSWD is adhering to the scheduled special payouts for Transport Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) drivers, motorcycle taxi drivers, and service delivery riders. The special payout, organized per TNC, targets beneficiaries who have not yet received their cash aid.

Dumlao explained that recent payouts included Joyride and Grab riders, with ongoing disbursements for Lalamove riders. Coordination with TNCs has been crucial to inform drivers about schedules and payout sites. As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, over 2,700 Lalamove riders claimed their PHP5,000 cash relief at The Tent along Gatchalian Drive in Las Pi±as City. The special payout for Lalamove riders will continue until May 21, supported by local government, Lalamove representatives, and DSWD social workers.

Dumlao noted improvements in the payout process, making it more organized and faster than previous schedules. TNCs are utilizing their communication platforms to ensure drivers receive accurate information regarding payout logistics.

The cash relief, falling under the DSWD's Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation program, aims to provide immediate help to public transport drivers impacted by rising fuel prices. This initiative is part of the Marcos administration's broader interventions under the Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport (UPLIFT) framework, targeting sectors affected by geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East.
