Manila: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has issued a warning to the public regarding scam messages circulating on the social media application Messenger. These messages invite individuals to provide their contact numbers in exchange for PHP8,000 in cash assistance.

According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao emphasized that the agency will not request personal details, such as contact numbers, from beneficiaries in exchange for financial assistance. Dumlao stated, "The DSWD does not ask for personal information through text or private messages on social media accounts in exchange for cash assistance. The sudden emergence of such messages is not the legitimate way that the DSWD distributes any kind of help or assistance."

Dumlao reminded the public that scammers often exploit crises to collect personal data and carry out fraudulent activities. She noted that scammers sometimes send text messages impersonating a beneficiary's relative, instructing them to join a group chat or sign up for a list to receive financial aid. Beneficiaries are urged to block and report accounts or phone numbers that initiate such scams to prevent further fraudulent incidents.

Dumlao advised individuals to verify the legitimacy of accounts before sharing information or clicking links shared in chats. She stressed that messages from the DSWD should come from its official accounts with a verified badge. The public is encouraged to seek assistance only through DSWD field offices, Local Social Welfare and Development Offices, or the official DSWD website and Facebook page.

The DSWD continues to combat misinformation and disinformation through its Tamang Tulong sa Tamang Impormasyon (3Ti) campaign. This initiative encourages beneficiaries to follow the official DSWD social media pages and website for accurate announcements regarding service availability.
