Manila: Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian visited Zamboanga City following the shooting incident at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) Junior High School campus on August 18. Gatchalian's visit was directed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who emphasized the importance of ensuring the well-being of all affected by the incident, including the broader community.
According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian emphasized the President's directive to prioritize the safety and recovery of the ADZU community. In response, the national government has coordinated with relevant agencies to offer necessary support. Gatchalian also made a strong appeal to the public, especially those in media and content creation, to refrain from sharing sensitive materials related to the incident, as they could further traumatize victims and violate the dignity of grieving families.
Gatchalian highlighted the importance of compassion and the protection of children's best interests. Sharing information about the incident, especially if inaccurate, could be harmful and impede the healing process. While he confirmed that those injured are recovering well, he withheld additional details to maintain patient confidentiality. Gatchalian assured that the DSWD is ready to provide assistance, including psychosocial support, to those affected by the tragedy.
In coordination with the ADZU administration, Gatchalian aims to ensure that the DSWD's efforts align with the school's support services. Similarly, the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) has urged the public to exercise restraint and sensitivity, asking people to avoid sharing images or details that could exacerbate the pain of the victims' families.
CEAP stressed the importance of protecting the dignity and privacy of those affected, allowing authorities and the school community to address the situation appropriately. The association expressed hope that this tragedy would prompt a commitment to enhancing safety and security measures in schools, advocating for environments of care and peace.
The organization expressed its solidarity and condolences to the students, families, faculty, and the entire school community, acknowledging the profound grief and shock experienced as a result of the incident.
