Makati City: Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian has made an appeal to the public to report locations frequented by families and individuals in street situations (FISS) to assist the 'Pag-abot' (Reach out) teams in their outreach efforts.
According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian urged citizens who encounter people living on the streets to utilize the DSWD and Pag-abot Facebook accounts by posting pictures and locations, enabling the teams to reach out effectively. He emphasized the need for public cooperation, given the expansive nature of Metro Manila and the mobility of street-dwelling individuals.
The DSWD acknowledged the operational challenges faced by its teams, including the difficulty in persuading FISS to voluntarily accept assistance. Some individuals feel threatened by the outreach efforts, fearing forced removal, while others are reluctant to leave a life they have grown accustomed to. Gatchalian assured that the DSWD has dedicated social workers committed to this program and will continue their efforts despite these challenges.
A notable development in the outreach operations is the involvement of 'Rose,' a woman previously living in a sewer in Makati City's central business district. Rose, after receiving assistance from the DSWD, is now helping the agency locate and persuade other street dwellers to accept support. Her participation represents a new strategy for the DSWD, leveraging former street dwellers to influence and encourage others to seek a better life.
The agency is actively exploring this model to strengthen their campaign, with Gatchalian expressing hope that it may prove effective. The DSWD's initiatives align with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to ensure street dwellers receive care and assistance through the Pag-abot Center.
Gatchalian reiterated the DSWD's commitment to continue reaching out and providing government assistance, as instructed by President Marcos, to expand support especially to the most impoverished populations.
