DSWD Unveils New Initiatives for Children and Indigenous Peoples in Northern Mindanao

Pangantucan:Bukidnon The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has launched new programs aimed at supporting children with disabilities (CWDs) and Indigenous Peoples (IPs) in Northern Mindanao. This initiative marks a significant effort by the agency to extend its services to underserved communities in the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian visited Pangantucan town in Bukidnon to engage with the Indigenous Community Craft-Making Farmers Association (ICCMFA). He also participated in the Comprehensive Assessment, Rehabilitation and Empowerment Caravan (CAREvan) in Camiguin, where 100 children with developmental delays and neurodevelopmental conditions were provided with free multidisciplinary developmental assessments and individualized treatment plans.

Gatchalian emphasized the government's commitment to serving CWDs, highlighting that DSWD is dedicated to reaching these children even in remote areas. In addition to the CAREvan activities, Gatchalian reviewed the implementation of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program in the province, seeking feedback from both implementers and beneficiaries to enhance the program's effectiveness.

Furthermore, DSWD bolstered its support to the ICCMFA by providing an additional PHP300,000, reiterating its promise of continuous technical guidance and capability building to ensure the sustainability of their livelihood projects. The initial funding was made available through the DSWD's PAyapa at MAsaganang PamayaNan, in collaboration with the local government unit.

Joel Rey Labid, chairperson of Barangay Adtuyon in Pangantucan, noted that 15 IP organizations within his jurisdiction have been reliant on government support from DSWD. Since 2018, these organizations have benefited from livelihood assistance provided by the department.
