Pasay city: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Monday called for stronger and more inclusive laws to improve the lives of persons with disabilities (PWDs).

According to Philippines News Agency, the appeal was made during the opening of the Legislative Town Hall Meeting for the 48th National Disability Rights Week (NDRW) at the Bayview Park Hotel in Pasay City. Assistant Secretary Zabedin Azis of the DSWD's Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs Group emphasized the need to update existing laws to better address the needs of persons with disabilities.

"The Philippines has made significant progress in protecting the rights of persons with disabilities through laws such as the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities and other important measures. These laws provide a strong foundation, but many Filipinos with disabilities continue to face barriers in accessing services, employment, education, transportation, and full participation in society," Azis stated.

He further stressed the importance of involving PWDs in policy-making processes. "The voices of persons with disabilities must remain at the center of every policy discussion. Their experiences provide valuable insights into the challenges that remain and the solutions needed to build more accessible, inclusive, and responsive communities," Azis added.

Azis also reiterated the DSWD's dedication to advocating for the rights and welfare of PWDs. He highlighted the department's collaboration with the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), local government units, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to enhance programs and services for PWDs.

"We remain committed to strengthening programs that promote protection, empowerment, and inclusion to ensure that no Filipino is left behind," he said.

The 48th National Disability Rights Week is being observed from July 17 to 23 with the theme, "Rights First, Legislation Forward: Strategic Action for Equal Participation and Inclusive Development."
