Manila: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has issued a stern warning to all beneficiaries of its financial assistance programs, emphasizing that the cash aid provided must not be used for gambling.
According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian has released a department-wide memorandum directing program implementers to remind beneficiaries that the financial aid is strictly for supporting basic needs and is not authorized for use in gambling activities. The memorandum clearly states, "These funds are for public purposes and cannot be used for any other purpose, especially in all forms and modes of gambling."
Gatchalian has also instructed for stronger post-distribution monitoring and the activation of grievance mechanisms to address any misuse reports. Beneficiaries found using their aid for gambling could face removal from the program and potential disqualification from future government assistance.
This initiative is part of the Marcos administration's broader campaign against gambling, aiming to mitigate its negative effects on Filipino households. The warning was issued after the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas recently directed e-wallet platforms to de-link from online gambling sites to reduce financial risks for users.
The DSWD urges all beneficiaries to use government assistance responsibly, as it is intended to alleviate poverty and improve the welfare of Filipinos.
