Manila: Following a round of talks in Canada last week, an official from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) expressed optimism for more developments in the fourth round of Philippine-Canada free trade agreement (FTA) discussions in September. "We're on track; we are working hard to conclude that as soon as possible," DTI Undersecretary Allan Gepty told journalists Monday night.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gepty declined to give specifics on the topics of their next discussions, but mentioned these will be "just the finishing touches." He indicated that the upcoming dialogue will primarily focus on market access. FTA talks with Canada began in October 2025, and Philippine trade officials are determined to finalize the agreement within the year to facilitate greater market access for both nations' products.

Trade officials have highlighted the current administration's goal of concluding its term with the most FTAs, offering more diversification options for Philippine businesses, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). As of 2025, Canada stands as the Philippines' 16th largest trading partner, with a merchandise trade level of USD2.15 billion.
