Manila: The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is considering organizing 15 trade shows in the National Capital Region (NCR) in 2026 to further support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
According to Philippines News Agency, these trade shows aim to build on the success of the previous year, where 13 trade shows generated PHP668 million in sales.
In a recent interview after the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the National Trade Fair at SM Megatrade Hall in Mandaluyong City, DTI Secretary Cristina Roque highlighted that sales for the upcoming year will be influenced by the specific trade fairs and their venues. She emphasized the DTI's goal to have more MSMEs participate in these trade shows, both locally and internationally.
Roque mentioned that the DTI has been instrumental in assisting nearly a million MSMEs, with the collaboration of mall owners who provide venues. She also noted that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is advocating for the continuous growth of MSMEs, as they significantly contribute to the domestic economy. MSMEs represent 99.6 percent of business establishments in the country and employ 64 percent of the labor force.
Regarding export opportunities, Roque expressed optimism about increasing demand from countries engaged in free trade agreement discussions with the Philippines, such as the European Union. There is also potential for expanded trade with Japan-based discount store Don Quijote, which is open to accepting Filipino-made products. Additionally, Roque mentioned the exploration of halal-based products, with compliance and regulations being developed in collaboration with officials from Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates.
Roque concluded by emphasizing the need for strategic planning to ensure growth in these areas.
