Manila: The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has re-exported 19,499 pieces of non-compliant rubber inner tubes for motorcycles, valued at PHP500,000, back to their country of origin. These inner tubes, intended for motorcycle tires, failed independent testing, specifically in tensile strength and elongation tests, as stated by the DTI.
According to Philippines News Agency, the inner tubes did not meet the minimum requirements of the Philippine National Standard, which sets safety and quality benchmarks for rubber inner tubes used in pneumatic tires. This action underscores the DTI's commitment to safety for the millions of Filipinos who rely on motorcycles for work, school, and livelihood. DTI Secretary Cristina Roque emphasized the serious nature of this work, stating that safety is non-negotiable.
The re-exportation also considers the economic impact on businesses, allowing them to recover some value from their non-compliant goods. This move is intended to discourage future attempts to import substandard products, thereby maintaining the integrity of products available in the market.
