Leyte: The Department of Tourism (DOT) said the recent visit of a luxury cruise ship to Leyte's Digyo Island reflects the growing potential of Eastern Visayas as a destination for boutique and expedition cruise tourism. DOT Eastern Visayas Regional Director Karina Rosa Tiopes emphasized the cultural connections and community experiences offered in coastal Inopacan town, which serves as a gateway to the Cuatro Islas, particularly Digyo Island.
According to Philippines News Agency, more than 80 guests aboard SH Minerva, a luxury expedition cruise ship operated by Swan Hellenic, made their maiden visit to the region on May 7. The visitors, primarily from Russia and Italy, along with travelers from Brazil, China, and the United States, engaged deeply with the local culture, exploring the community's traditional lifestyles and livelihoods.
During their stay, the cruise guests observed local crafts such as weaving using 'romblon,' a screw pine crafted into various items, and witnessed residents repairing fishing nets and making dried fish. They also learned about the gathering of coconut nectar for producing 'tuba,' a local coconut wine.
The guests sampled a range of local delicacies, including kabkab, a cassava cracker, and other traditional sweets like puto bilanghoy, puto kutsinta, bibingka, camote cue, and biko. Tiopes highlighted the immersive experience that allowed visitors to enjoy cultural interactions, food tastings, and community encounters, alongside appreciating the natural beauty of Digyo Island.
Beyond the planned activities, guests engaged with the community through music, dancing, and conversations, fostering a meaningful cultural exchange. Many visitors supported local artisans by purchasing handmade products and souvenirs. Tiopes noted that Eastern Visayas is becoming a preferred destination for expedition-style cruise itineraries, with frequent visits from luxury and boutique cruise liners.
Regular cruise calls have been reported at destinations like Kalanggaman Island and Cuatro Islas in Leyte, with emerging stops at Capul Island, Biri Island, and Lavezares in Northern Samar; Maripipi Island, Sambawan Island, and Higatangan Island in Biliran; and Limasawa Island in Southern Leyte.
