Iloilo city: Strategies employed by the municipality of San Remigio, Antique in managing its solid waste were recognized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) as sustainable.

According to Philippines News Agency, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer (MENRO) Ruth Martinez stated in an interview that San Remigio was awarded the title of Champion of Waste Management during a ceremony held in Iloilo City on August 19. The recognition highlights the municipality's efforts in closing its open dumpsite back in 2018 and adopting innovative waste management strategies since then.

One notable strategy implemented by San Remigio is waste diversion, where collected waste is sold to junk shops to maintain the cleanliness of the residual containment area. The "no waste segregation, no collection" policy has significantly reduced the amount of solid waste collected, as emphasized by Martinez. This policy has not only helped in maintaining the cleanliness of the area but also in generating income.

Martinez further explained that the income generated from selling recyclable waste is used to incentivize LGU-hired waste collectors, creating a sustainable cycle that benefits both the environment and the local economy. Additionally, San Remigio Mayor Margarito Mission, Jr. plans to procure another garbage truck to improve the efficiency of solid waste collection, adding to the two existing garbage trucks already in operation.
