Iloilo city: Electric consumers in this highly urbanized city are encouraged to observe energy-saving measures amid the unstable power supply in the Visayas grid. In an interview on Thursday, More Electric and Power Corp. (MORE Power) spokesperson Angel Tan said the utility firm has been implementing strategic load shedding in response to the grid alert status of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).
According to Philippines News Agency, 12 power plants in the Visayas have been on forced outage from March to May. In addition, 13 power plants are operating at derated capacities, resulting in 902.7 megawatts of power being unavailable to the grid. Tan explained that during requests for manual load dropping (MLD), MORE Power strategically identifies areas that can be deloaded to minimize the impact on consumers. She noted, "We identify areas where there is less impact on our consumers. That is the strategic way because we have the capability to lessen the affected consumers."
The NGCP has been issuing alert statuses and implementing manual load dropping to maintain the power system's integrity over the past few days. On Thursday, a red alert status was in effect from 2:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., with a yellow alert from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. "A red alert status is issued when the power supply is insufficient to meet the consumer demand and the transmission grid's regulating requirement. A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement," the NGCP explained.
