Makati city: The European Union (EU) is urging for closer bloc-to-bloc cooperation on energy with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as disruptions caused by the Middle East crisis reverberate across global energy markets. Speaking on the sidelines of the Europe Day reception in Makati City on Tuesday night, EU Ambassador to the Philippines Massimo Santoro said EU, like ASEAN, is currently dealing with the energy emergency at 'leaders' level.'
According to Philippines News Agency, Ambassador Santoro emphasized the importance of enhanced collaboration between the EU and ASEAN in tackling the current energy crisis. He highlighted the potential benefits of joint efforts on energy efficiency, energy security, and renewable energy issues as a means to fortify cooperation amidst the global crisis. Santoro noted that this is not a challenge faced by the Philippines alone, but a widespread global issue requiring a comprehensive approach.
At the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu last week, Southeast Asian leaders introduced strategies to mitigate the crisis's impact on food supplies and energy. These measures include strengthening coordination within ASEAN and with dialogue partners. The EU's commitment to sustainable energy development in Southeast Asia is evident through its support for the ASEAN Power Grid.
Last month, the Asian Development Bank announced a USD25 billion infrastructure support for the ASEAN Power Grid, with the EU contributing to this initiative. This move signifies the EU's dedication to bolstering energy connectivity and addressing the challenges posed by the current crisis in the Middle East.
