Escudero Urges Senate to Unite Under the Flag, Not Party Colors

Pasay city: Senate President Francis Escudero on Monday urged his fellow lawmakers to cast aside political partisanship and recommit to public service and national unity as the 20th Congress opened its first regular session. Speaking at the Senate plenary in Pasay City, Escudero highlighted the Philippine flag as a symbol of shared duty and purpose. 'It stands before us now, not as a mere symbol, but as a solemn reminder of the country that we serve, the people we represent, and the duty we have sworn to fulfill,' he said.

According to Philippines News Agency, he encouraged senators to let go of partisan affiliations and embrace the ideals represented by the colors of the national flag: 'Asul: sagisag ng lahing Pilipino, na kakaiba sa ibang mga lahi. May dangal at paninindigan, at hindi kailanman palulupig (Blue: symbol of the Filipino race -distinct, dignified, and unyielding).' 'For the sake of our people, it is time we trade the colors of our campaigns for the colors of our country,' Escudero added.

He also underscored the importance of listening to opposing views and respecting diverse perspectives. 'Ang mga pagkakaiba natin ay hindi sagabal. Bagkus, ito ang nagbibigay saysay sa ating mga deliberasyon (Our differences are not obstacles. Rather, they give meaning to our deliberations),' he added.

Escudero was reelected head of the 24-member chamber as the body formally convened on Monday for the opening of the 20th Congress. After garnering 19 votes that fortified his place as Senate chief -a role which he first assumed in May 2024, he expressed gratitude to his fellow senators for their continued trust and confidence in his leadership.
