Caraga: A group of more than 3,000 former New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Caraga Region welcomed the appointment of Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento as the new head of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s administration.

According to Philippines News Agency, former rebels, organized under the United Caraganon for Peace and Development Federation, Inc. (UCPDFI), lead a network of associations composed of ex-NPA members who have reintegrated into society. Across the region, they now benefit from government support through a range of programs, services, and livelihood initiatives.

'Sec. Sarmiento's appointment is a step toward strengthening the government's commitment to genuine peacebuilding, reconciliation, and inclusive national unity,' said Aljun Intano, the president of UCPDFI, in an interview on Thursday. He added that Sarmiento has extensive experience in public service and governance, which could help advance policies addressing the root causes of armed conflict and promote the sustainable reintegration of former rebels into mainstream society.

'The members of UCPDFI are in the process of reintegrating into their families and communities. We are highly encouraged by his appointment to continue working with the government to achieve lasting peace,' Intano said. Intano also vowed to collaborate with the OPAPRU, concerned government agencies, and local government units in the region to further enhance socio-economic programs and confidence-building measures to benefit former rebels and conflict-affected communities.

'We also urge all stakeholders to unite and support OPAPRU's new leadership to achieve lasting peace in the region,' he said.
