Ilocos Norte: The provincial government of Ilocos Norte has collaborated with a private entity to bring art closer to Ilocanos and help stir economic development and cultural awareness. In collaboration with the Ayala Museum Inc., the provincial government opened on Thursday the 'Pioneers of Philippine Art' exhibit, featuring the works of renowned artists from the 19th and 20th centuries like Fernando Amorsolo, Fernando Zobel de Ayala, and Juan Luna at the Arte Luna in Paoay town.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc, in an interview, said there is a need for more art curators and artists in the province to bring about a culturally aware Ilocano community. "We need to invest in all these programs as we need (museum) experts and more artists," Manotoc said, noting that heritage and culture are also a form of livelihood in the province.
Aprille Tijam, assistant director and head of the exhibitions and collections of the Ayala Museum, graced the event and shared the story of the featured artists and their contributions to the world of art. Attended by students who have an interest and appreciation for arts and culture, the exhibit hopes to entice more Ilocanos to familiarize themselves with the pioneers of arts and immerse themselves with the cultural heritage of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
The Ayala Museum's doll collection has also been on exhibit at the Arte Luna since November last year. It showcases 12 meticulously crafted dolls representing significant costumes worn by various groups across the Philippines. "There's always a connection that makes us better Filipinos," Tijam said as she expressed hope for a more productive exchange of ideas, with a lecture series and guided tour with students and visitors at the twin exhibit.
The exhibit is open until May 30 and can be viewed daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
