Balut island: A magnitude 6.6 earthquake jolted Balut Island in Sarangani on Friday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said. The tectonic earthquake occurred at 7:34 p.m., 90 kilometers southwest of Balut Island, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
According to Philippines News Agency, the quake's impact was felt at various intensities across several areas. Intensity V was recorded in Kiamba, Sarangani. Intensity IV was observed in Don Marcelino and Santa Maria, Davao Occidental. Intensity III affected the City of Davao and Matanao, Davao del Sur. Intensity II was noted in the City of Digos, Davao del Sur, and in Monkayo, Mawab, and Maragusan, Davao de Oro.
Instrumental intensities, measured using intensity meters, also documented significant readings. Intensity V was recorded in Malapatan, Sarangani, and T'boli, South Cotabato. Intensity IV was experienced in Malungon, Maitum, Kiamba, and Maasim in Sarangani, as well as in Tupi and the City of Koronadal in South Cotabato. Intensity III was felt in Santa Maria, Davao Occidental, Tampakan, South Cotabato, and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.
Further extending to Intensity II, the areas affected included Magsaysay, Davao del Sur, Norala, Banga, Santo Nino, and Surallah in South Cotabato, along with Lebak, Isulan, Kalamansig, and President Quirino in Sultan Kudarat. Intensity I was recorded in Magpet, M'lang, and President Roxas, Cotabato, and in Columbio and Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat.
The reported intensity indicates the quake's impact based on human perception, while the instrumental intensity provides a more precise measurement using ground acceleration data.
