Marikina city: Two employees of a firearms manufacturer were killed in an explosion at a manufacturing plant in Marikina City on Monday afternoon, the police said. Marikina City Police Chief Col. Geoffrey Fernandez confirmed the fatalities, who were employees of Armscor Global Defense Inc. One victim, aged 34, succumbed to chest injuries while receiving medical treatment, and the second victim, aged 44, died later that evening after losing both hands in the blast.
According to Philippines News Agency, Fernandez described the incident in a radio interview, expressing regret over the loss of lives. He mentioned that an item wrapped in cloth exploded upon being opened, and that the police are reviewing the facility's closed-circuit television footage to understand the cause of the explosion.
Armscor Global Defense Inc. issued a statement acknowledging the incident and mentioned that, besides the two deceased, another individual was injured but has since been discharged from the hospital. The company extended condolences to the victims' families and assured them of assistance and support.
The company also emphasized its cooperation with the Philippine National Police and other government agencies as investigations continue. AGDI chairperson, president, and CEO Martin Tuason reiterated the firm's compliance with international standards, industry practices, local regulations, and inspections conducted by the PNP throughout its operational history.
