Fallen ‘Super Huey’ Aircrew Honored with Distinguished Aviation Cross

Manila: The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has posthumously awarded the Distinguished Aviation Cross to the six crew members of the ill-fated "Super Huey" helicopter, which crashed while conducting a humanitarian and disaster response mission in Agusan del Sur on Nov. 4, following the onslaught of Typhoon Tino (international name Kalmaegi). "In recognition of their extraordinary bravery and selfless service, the fallen airmen were posthumously awarded the Distinguished Aviation Cross. Their heroism stands as a lasting testament to the PAF's core values of integrity, service above self, and excellence," PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Christina Basco said in a statement Thursday night.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Distinguished Aviation Cross is a military decoration presented for heroism or achievement during aerial operations. Basco also said the PAF rendered full military honors for the fallen aircrew. Earlier on Thursday, the remains of Sgt. Yves Sijub arrived at the Rajah Buayan Air Station, General Santos City, aboard an NC-212i aircraft while Airman Ameer Khaidar Apion was brought home to Edwin Andrews Air Base, Zamboanga City.

Meanwhile, the remains of Capt. Paulie Dumagan, 2nd Lt. Royce Louis Camigla, Sgt. John Christopher Golfo, and Airman First Class Ericson Merico PAF arrived at Villamor Air Base, Pasay City, aboard a C-130 aircraft Thursday night following their departure from Davao Air Station. "The remains were received by their bereaved families and loved ones, alongside Lt. Gen. Arthur Cordura PAF, Commanding General PAF, and other key military personnel, who paid tribute to their courage and dedication to duty," Basco said.

"Their sacrifice in the line of duty will forever be remembered. As Guardians of the Skies and Defenders of the Nation, we honor their legacy and remain steadfast in upholding the ideals they so valiantly embodied," she added.
