Manila: Additional measures from the government aimed at encouraging the public to take advantage of the benefits of using electrified vehicles (EVs) will further bolster the demand for such vehicles. 'I think the government should participate in expanding the EV infrastructure. At the same time, I think the government should be able to assist companies, like AC Mobility, in fast-tracking our permitting with certain LGUs (local government units) that we set up the charging infrastructure,' Bob Palanca, BYD Cars Philippines managing director, said on the sidelines of the launch of the company's latest models in Quezon City on Tuesday night.

According to Philippines News Agency, earlier, Department of Energy (DOE) officials said they are working with various stakeholders to facilitate the faster permitting process for EV charging stations, most of which are currently located in Metro Manila. DOE Director Patrick Aquino earlier said the agency is working with LGUs and the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Public Works and Highways, and the Anti-Red Tape Authority for streamlined permit processing.

To date, securing a permit for putting up EV charging stations takes about six months. Nationwide, there are about 1,600 EV charging stations, mostly in Luzon, and the government aims to hit 7,000 units by 2028. This move, Palanca said, will help bolster EV sales, supporting the government's bid to reduce the use and reliance on fuel-run vehicles.

Automotive groups have reported a jump in EV sales, especially following the US-Iran war that broke out late February, and EV manufacturers eye higher sales in the coming months. Palanca declined to give any forecast figure on sales but said growth will be significant.
