FEU Triumphs Over NU, Nears UAAP Men’s Volleyball Championship

Quezon City: Far Eastern University defeated defending champion National University in a thrilling match, 22-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-22, 15-13, during Game 1 of the UAAP Season 87 men's volleyball finals at Smart Araneta Coliseum. This victory places FEU just one win away from claiming their first championship since Season 74 in 2012.

According to Philippines News Agency, Dryx Saavedra was instrumental in the Tamaraws' success, scoring a game-high 25 points composed of 21 attacks, three blocks, and an ace. Amet Samuel Bituin added 16 points with 13 attacks and three blocks, while Mikko Espartero contributed 10 points and 26 excellent receptions for FEU.

NU's defeat marks their first loss in the finals since Season 79 when Ateneo de Manila University swept the tournament. The Bulldogs had dominated the subsequent four seasons, with a break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tamaraws coach Eddieson Orcullo attributed the victory to strategic adjustments and minimized errors, especially in the fifth set. Orcullo emphasized the team's hunger for success, which drove them to prepare thoroughly and perform effectively.

The win served as a form of redemption for FEU, who previously lost to NU in the preliminaries. FEU is set to compete for their 26th title on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

For NU, Leo Ordiales achieved a career-high 23 points, while Jade Disquitado and Michaelo Buddin contributed significantly to the team's efforts. Despite Buddin dealing with a sprained right ankle, he managed to score 12 points, with additional support from teammates Rwenzmel Taguibolos and Leo Aringo Jr.
