Filipinos Arrested in Qatar Over Suspected ‘Unauthorized’ Rallies

Doha: The Philippine Embassy in Doha on Friday night confirmed that 'several Filipino nationals' were arrested over suspected 'unauthorized' political demonstrations in Qatar.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Doha announced that these Filipino nationals were detained for participating in political demonstrations that were not authorized by local authorities. The embassy stated it is working with local officials to ensure the detained individuals receive necessary consular assistance.

Details regarding the arrests, including the exact number of Filipinos involved, remain undisclosed as the embassy and the Department of Foreign Affairs have yet to release official statements. This development follows an advisory issued by the embassy on March 13, which urged Filipino nationals to adhere to local laws and customs regarding mass demonstrations and political expressions.

The advisory's release coincided with the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte by the International Criminal Court, an event that sparked reactions from overseas groups. These groups have reportedly organized rallies and called for a zero-remittance week to express support for Duterte.
