Milan: Thousands of Filipinos gathered at the iconic Arco Della Pace in Milan's Piazze Sempione on July 6 for the Sandiwa Filitalia, a major cultural event celebrating Kalayaan 2025 and marking 78 years of Philippine-Italian diplomatic relations. The event was a significant part of the month-long 127th Philippine Independence Day celebration, showcasing a blend of traditional heritage and modern Filipino identity through various programs and activities.
According to Philippines News Agency, the event was led by the Philippine Consulate General in Milan's Consul General Elmer Cato and the Kalayaan 2025 Organizing Committee from the Bayanihan Council of Northern Italy. In his opening remarks, Cato highlighted the event's theme of unity and solidarity. He expressed gratitude to Italy and its people for their hospitality and generosity, which have contributed to the betterment of lives for Filipinos in Italy and their families back home.
The celebration featured vibrant performances, including folk dances, kundiman renditions, and modern dances. Attendees also enjoyed food stalls offering popular Filipino treats such as 'halo-halo', 'kakanin', and various regional favorites. As part of the Kalayaan 2025 festivities, the Consulate hosted a culinary event, 'Mekeni, Mangan Tamu: A Taste of Pampanga', featuring dishes by renowned chefs Manuela Cherry Tan and Leonard Vincent Garcia. The event paid tribute to Pampanga's rich culinary culture and celebrated Angeles City's nomination as Asia's Best Culinary City Destination at the 2025 World Culinary Awards.
