Firecracker Injuries Surge by 49% in Ilocos Region During Holiday Season

MALASIQUI: The Department of Health in Ilocos Region (DOH-1) reported a significant increase in firecracker-related injuries over the holiday season, with 70 cases recorded from December 21 to December 31, 2024. This marks a 49 percent rise compared to the 47 cases reported during the same period in 2023.

According to Philippines News Agency, the breakdown of injuries reveals that Pangasinan accounted for the highest number of cases with 46, followed by La Union with 12, Ilocos Sur with 10, and Ilocos Norte with two. The figures for Ilocos Norte remained unchanged from the previous year. Dr. Rheuel Bobis, a medical officer at DOH-1, indicated that the predominant cause of these injuries was the use of 'boga,' an improvised cannon, responsible for 41 percent, or 29 cases, of the total injuries recorded.

The report further detailed that five-star fireworks were the second most common cause of injuries, resulting in nine cases. Baby rockets and skyrockets each accounted for four injuries, while whistle devices were linked to three cases. Giant whistle bombs and 'pla-pla' each caused two injuries. Despite the increase in injuries, no fatalities were reported, although two individuals required amputations. Most victims sustained burns or blast injuries.

Dr. Bobis also noted that hospitals in the region will remain on code white alert until January 6 to ensure readiness for any medical emergencies during the extended holiday period. This alert status ensures that all hospitals are prepared, with health professionals and personnel on standby to respond to emergencies as needed.
