Manila: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), in coordination with the City Government of Manila, is set to implement a major flood control project along Espa±a Boulevard aimed at improving drainage and reducing flooding in the area. During an inspection of the area on Thursday, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso announced that pipe improvement works and the construction of a catch basin will begin in September to help address the long-standing flooding problem that has affected students, motorists, and commuters.
According to Philippines News Agency, the planned works include the construction of a cross-drainage system and a detention basin in front of the two churches along Earnshaw Street to improve water drainage and help reduce flooding in the area. Dizon expressed the need for cooperation with the local government, stating, "We are planning pipe interventions to be done here in Espa±a. These interventions are quite heavy, and we will not be able to do it without the help of the local government of the City of Manila."
The project will involve major construction activities, including the building of four cross drainages. The City Hall has already given approval for the plan, which aims to redirect collected water to the pumping station. Dizon noted that a detention basin would be constructed near Bustillos, in front of the churches on Earnshaw, to further alleviate flooding issues.
In addition to the drainage system, portions of Espa±a Boulevard that are prone to water accumulation will be elevated. Dizon requested patience and cooperation from the public during the construction phase, assuring that the work will proceed swiftly and continuously to minimize inconvenience.
Mayor Moreno expressed gratitude to the DPWH for their prompt response to the city's requests, highlighting the importance of interventions in crucial areas such as Taft Avenue, Adriatico area, Espa±a, and Sunog Apog. "Things are being given attention and concern; it's really there. We're very happy with DPWH on what they are doing," Moreno said.
