Malabon: Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) personnel arrested four male suspects involved in the illegal trading and distribution of petroleum products, locally known as 'paihi,' and seized around PHP20 million worth of fuel products in Malabon City early Friday.
According to Philippines News Agency, CIDG-National Capital Region chief, Col. John Guiagui, reported that the smuggled diesel products were confiscated during police operations in Barangay Concepcion around 2:30 a.m. The arrested suspects are now facing criminal charges for violations of Presidential Decree 1865.
Col. Guiagui highlighted that the operation was a follow-up to a previous crackdown on oil product smuggling. During this latest operation, four individuals were apprehended, and two tugboats carrying more than 100,000 liters of diesel were seized. He issued a warning to those engaged in similar illegal activities, emphasizing that CIDG will continue to pursue them.
Under the 'paihi' scheme, suspects siphon diesel from tugboats, and in doing so, some diesel is dumped into the water, posing environmental threats. Guiagui expressed concern over the impact of such activities on the environment and the livelihoods of residents in Malabon and Navotas, where fishing is a primary source of income. Smuggling also results in tax evasion, further affecting the public treasury.
The CIDG is currently investigating potential buyers and exploring the possibility of foreign involvement in this illegal trade. Guiagui noted the significant losses to public resources, environmental harm, and potential danger to consumers if diesel and water are mixed during the siphoning process.
