Garcia Draws with Carlsen in ASEAN Esports Chess Cup

Bangkok: Filipino International Master Jem Garcia drew with world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen Saturday in the ASEAN ESports Chess Cup in Bangkok, Thailand. Garcia settled for a 51-move draw in their Reti showdown in the fourth and final round in Group A.

According to Philippines News Agency, Garcia finished third in the five-player bracket with 2.5 points, trailing behind Carlsen's 3.5 points and Spanish Grandmaster Jose Martinez's three points. Carlsen and Martinez advanced to the quarterfinals of the event organized by WR Chess.

Meanwhile, former world No. 2 Fabiano Caruana did not advance after securing the third position in Group B. United Arab Emirates' GM Salem A.R. Saleh and Singaporean GM Tin Jingyao also secured spots in the quarterfinals.
