Cebu city: A total of 2,587 active indigenous peoples (IP) households in Central Visayas continue to receive comprehensive assistance from the national government, a social welfare official said on Thursday. Shalaine Marie Lucero, regional director of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-Central Visayas, highlighted the significant support provided to IPs in the region, particularly the Sama Bajau and Atis in Cebu. This includes aid through the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4P) cash grants, enhanced interventions, and capability-building activities. According to Philippines News Agency, the program known as COMPRE is an integrated approach offering a package of services and interventions addressing the needs of IP people living and/or at risk on the streets. This program has provided them with hygiene kits, educational and livelihood assistance, and leadership training for youth members. The region is home to a total of 17 indigenous cultural communities spread across different citi es and municipalities in Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor. In celebration of IP month, members of IP communities were treated to various services at a local mall. The Sama Bajau and Ati Indigenous Peoples communities showcased their distinct cultural and traditional identity through a dance presentation. Lucero emphasized the government's commitment to listening to and addressing the needs of IP people in the region. During the celebration, IPs received access to several services such as the 'AlkanSSSya Program' of the Social Security System, free medical services from the Department of Health, and information-sharing from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority. The DSWD-7 provided aid through the WiSupport mental health program, while the Public Attorneys Office offered free legal services. Additionally, the Department of Agriculture distributed seeds, and free eye consultations were made available by volunteers from the University of San Carlos Alpha Alumni Association. The Ph ilippine Statistics Authority also assisted the IPs with obtaining their PhilSys identification card.
