Dagupan city: The provincial government of La Union is on red alert status since Wednesday as it braces for the possible effects of Typhoon Leon (international name Kong-rey) and the influx of people flocking cemeteries for 'Undas' (All Saints' and All Souls' Day). 'We have already prepared our rescue equipment ahead of time to respond immediately to those in need of our assistance. The safety of our provincemates remains to be our utmost priority,' La Union Governor Raphaelle Veronica Ortega-David said in a statement Thursday. According to Philippines News Agency, tropical cyclone wind signals have been lifted in the province as of 11 a.m., but the weather bureau said Leon will continue to bring moderate to heavy rainfall over most of Northern Luzon. Two ambulances, two rescue pick-up trucks, two rubber boats, a jetski, and a rescue truck were prepositioned, as well as food items, medicines, and hygiene kits, she said. 'We remind our provincemates to be alert, vigilant and safe. We also advise those living in the low-lying areas that are prone to flash floods and landslides to evacuate ahead of time to prevent casualties,' she added. The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has readied four teams, composed of seven personnel each, to respond to any emergencies. It will also deploy four teams to monitor the situations in cemeteries during the long weekend. Ortega-David also advised the public who will troop to the cemeteries to abide by safety and traffic standards.
