Government Investigates Alleged Structure in Bajo de Masinloc

Manila: The National Task Force (NTF) for the West Philippine Sea (WPS) has initiated an investigation into reports regarding a new structure in the Bajo de Masinloc area of the WPS. This development has prompted concerns about potential implications on the Philippines' sovereignty and jurisdiction in the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, NTF-WPS Spokesperson and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commodore Jay Tarriela emphasized that the government is taking these reports seriously. Relevant government agencies are actively engaged in verification and validation processes to determine the accuracy and nature of the reports. These efforts involve utilizing available monitoring, surveillance, and operational assessment mechanisms.

Commodore Tarriela urged the public to refrain from speculation during the verification process and assured that updates will be provided once the facts are clearly established. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting national interests, defending maritime entitlements, and upholding international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitral Award.

On social media, the non-profit group SeaLight released a satellite image supporting the reports of a new object near Bajo de Masinloc. However, SeaLight has not yet confirmed the object's nature or origin. The group noted that China has maintained control over the shoal since 2012 and has restricted access since 2024, making attribution to other actors unlikely.

SeaLight specializes in monitoring maritime "gray zone" activities, employing commercially available technology to track incidents such as harassment of fishermen, illegal incursions, and artificial island building.
