Camiguin: Several national and local government executives convened to discuss potential improvements to the Camiguin Airport runway, aiming to enhance its capacity and boost local tourism. Department of Transportation (DOTr) acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez emphasized that these planned improvements align with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to accommodate larger aircraft, thereby reducing airfares and promoting tourism in the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lopez, during a visit to Camiguin Airport in Mambajao town, highlighted the importance of upgrading the airport to attract more tourists and stimulate the local economy. He stated, "Camiguin is very beautiful, that's why we need to improve the runway so that more tourists can visit and help grow the province's economy."

In discussions with DOTr Undersecretary for Aviation and Airports Jim Sydiongco, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines Deputy Director General Danjun Lucas, Philippine Ports Authority General Manager Jay Santiago, and Camiguin Representative Jurdin Jesus 'JJ' Romualdo, Lopez assured that the acquisition of land to extend the airport's runway from 1,200 meters to 2,400 meters is being expedited.

Earlier, on February 5, Lopez announced plans to extend all runways in regional and provincial airports to a minimum standard of 2,100 meters. This initiative is intended to make domestic travel more accessible and affordable for both local and international tourists, especially to some of the country's prime destinations.
