Government Seeks PHP1.62-B Budget for 2027 Greening Initiative to Protect 18,645 Hectares of Forests

Manila:The government is proposing a budget of PHP1.62 billion for the Expanded National Greening Program (NGP) in 2027. This allocation nearly triples the current funding to support the rehabilitation, maintenance, and protection of 18,645 hectares of forests and other suitable lands across the nation.

According to Philippines News Agency, the proposed allocation under the 2027 National Expenditure Program represents an increase of 186.32 percent from the PHP565 million designated for the program in the 2026 General Appropriations Act. The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) announced this information on Wednesday.

In his budget message, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. highlighted the critical role of environmental protection and climate resilience in ensuring the country's long-term security and prosperity. He emphasized that by safeguarding natural resources and enhancing the capacity to manage future risks, the nation is working towards a more sustainable future for all generations.

Beyond the initial tree planting, the Expanded NGP emphasizes the maintenance and protection of rehabilitated areas to ensure the survival of newly planted trees and sustain reforestation achievements. The program also aims to create livelihood opportunities for upland and lowland communities, including Indigenous Peoples, by involving them in the sustainable management of forests.

The proposed PHP1.62 billion budget is part of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources' overall PHP29.47 billion proposed budget for 2027, which marks a 4.24 percent increase from its PHP28.27 billion budget for 2026.
