Manila: Key transport and traffic agencies are coordinating to craft protocols and a traffic management plan in anticipation of major road works along the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), one of Metro Manila's busiest thoroughfares, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Wednesday. In a press briefing in Malaca±ang, DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan noted preparations are underway to minimize public inconvenience once the EDSA rehabilitation starts mid-June.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) are working closely to finalize a comprehensive traffic scheme, including alternative routes and lane reassignments during the construction phase. Secretary Bonoan emphasized that while inconvenience is expected, measures are being developed to manage the impact.
One of the proposals being considered is the temporary use of parts of Skyway Stage 3 by regular EDSA motorists. Bonoan mentioned that the DOTr is negotiating with Skyway concessionaires to allow vehicles from EDSA to use the Skyway during rehabilitation works. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon had earlier indicated that the Toll Regulatory Board plans to request San Miguel Corp. to waive tolls on parts of the Skyway during the project.
In addition, the MMDA is exploring dedicated lane separations to ensure smoother traffic flow. The government aims to complete the first phase of the project next year, aligning with Manila's hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.
