Manila: De La Salle University reclaimed the UAAP men's basketball crown after pulling off an 80-72 victory over University of the Philippines in Game 2 of the Season 88 Finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday evening. This victory marks the Green Archers' 11th UAAP title, further solidifying their position as one of the league's most successful teams.
According to Philippines News Agency, the two teams met in the championship round for the third straight season. The Green Archers previously triumphed in Season 86, while the Fighting Maroons claimed the Season 87 title. Head coach Topex Robinson expressed his gratitude and respect for the competition, stating, "Our adversities really strengthened our faith. This series is a journey worth remembering. We also have to honor and acknowledge UP for bringing out the best in us, but again, grateful and blessed to win another championship."
Graduating player Mike Phillips was instrumental in the victory, finishing with 25 points and 18 rebounds. Reflecting on his performance, Phillips said, "Jesus brought us to rock bottom so he could show us that He is the rock. Jesus Christ is the one who saved us. I just wanted to give my heart out for La Salle." His remarkable efforts earned him the Finals MVP title.
Other notable contributions came from Mason Amos, who chipped in 11 points, four assists, three rebounds, and three blocks, and Vhoris Marasigan, who added 10 points and two steals. La Salle maintained a lead of 76-69 with just 31 seconds remaining in the game. Jacob Cortez also played a significant role with nine points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
For the Fighting Maroons, Rey Remogat delivered an impressive 21 points, including a crucial triple that put UP ahead at 67-64 with 4:09 left in the fourth quarter. Despite his efforts and those of his teammates, UP could not maintain the lead. Francis Nnoruka contributed 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Reyland Torres added 11 points.
De La Salle's path to victory included a win in Game 1 with a score of 74-70, followed by a narrow loss in Game 2, 66-63, before clinching the championship in Game 3.
